There is a lovely beach and a very lively night life at week-ends. The lighthouse on St. Mary's Island is open for visitors and the headland is a nature reserve enjoying a wide variety of bird life throughout the year Formerly a fishing village, Cullercoats retains the charm that attracted famous artists in the late 19th century. Charlton, Jobling, Birkett Foster & American, Winslow Homer did some of their finest work here.

The Priory dates from 1065 and occupied the site of a Saxon settlement. It is said that three kings are are buried there, including St. Oswin, king & martyr. The castle was built to defend both the Priory and the and the entrance to the river Tyne. The Spanish Battery was named after the Spanish Gunners who, in 1545, were paid to build and man it. Front Street is quaint shopping street with a unique church converted into craft stores.

The Long Sands are well known as a premier surfing beach and nearby is a well equipped aquarium.

North Shields Fishquay

North Shields Fish Quay is the biggest prawn port in the U.K.
Two towers, The High & Low Lights, built in 1810 mark the safe passage into the Tyne.
Stan Laurel (of Laurel & Hardy fame) spent his boyhood in North Shields.
